The Image Generator

2022

Sofia (Bulgaria)

Jan Van Goethem, Nele Tas and Tine Colen previously worked together under the name 3 24 51 76. In a ground-floor studio in Antwerp, they invited other artists into an ever-changing and exponentially growing presentation on the verge of an exhibition, a performance and a happening at once. This vivid practice of visualizing a community in time and space will be further developed during a temporary residency during The Image Generator. In Krasno Selo they will rely on their network of contacts from Belgium, on the contributions of the artists of Image Generator and on the results of interaction with the audience. Actions, objects and words – all temporarily borrowed and brought together in a meeting and display space – will tell evolving stories of mutual dependence.

The Image Generator is a site-specific event that explores the interaction between visual art, sound art, and performance. The live encounter between these practices not only provides a fertile ground for new and groundbreaking art forms but also fosters a more direct and mutual exchange between artists, the environment, and the audience. It is in the potential for this interaction that new images and perspectives are born, where we can meet each other and share our most fleeting intuitions in an ongoing dialogue.

Participating artists include: Rebecca Baron, Christian Bakalov, Meryem Bayram, Jan Van Goethem, Tine Colen, Nele Tas, Wannes Deneer, Zhana Ivanova, Mala Kline, Asli Seven & Valentina Traianova, Vitto Valentinov, Myriam Van Imschoot & Marcus Bergner, Marc Vanrunxt & Peter Savel / Peter Savel & Sasha Krastarska, Stela Vasileva, YouYou Group, and Yi Zhang.

About

After her training in the medium of painting, Tine Colen (1985) felt the need not to simply represent or imitate the world, but to be in the midst of things. Gradually, the following elements became characteristic of her work: The blurring of boundaries between art and functional objects by creating items that carry meaning and can sometimes be used / working with natural materials in a cyclical process, often defined by their temporary, seasonal nature, as well as human-made materials considered waste / seeking specific knowledge about plant usage through the study of ethnobotany and anthropology / a slow and labor-intensive making process, rooted in collective creation / generating value through the way objects are used, gifted, and passed on / using public space as a workshop, where the physical work sparks conversation, encounters, and change.
