Beyond the Black Box

2026

BEYOND THE BLACK BOX is a collaboration between Monty, wpZimmer, C-TAKT, Platform 0090 and Good Company.

to shrink, to enshrine.

During the festival What We Will created a new rug, with and for the public. In the weeks leading up to it we have been reading and drawing together, washing dyeing and carding wool, and preparing a new reed mat for felting. This took place during a residency at Cultivamos Cultura (PT) and on the street in front of wpZimmer in Borgerhout. The slow rhythm of the process opened space for conversation: within the group, with guests, and with passersby. We invited local musicians to accompany our collective labor, to synchronize and lighten the physical work. In doing so, our tools and gestures merge into a shared rhythmic instrument. wThe last day we rolled out the carpets at Monty — to rest, to eat together, and to share stories. To make time for what we will.

WHAT WE WILL is an open collective of artists who use public space as a site for interaction, making processes and shared learning. Currently, WWW consists of Anisa El Margai, Marianne Borremans, Tine Colen, Leander Sebrechts, Jan van Goethem, Inès Ballesteros, Nele Tas, Wouter Van der Hallen and Anaïs Van Hoorebeke.

About

After her training in the medium of painting, Tine Colen (1985) felt the need not to simply represent or imitate the world, but to be in the midst of things. Gradually, the following elements became characteristic of her work: The blurring of boundaries between art and functional objects by creating items that carry meaning and can sometimes be used / working with natural materials in a cyclical process, often defined by their temporary, seasonal nature, as well as human-made materials considered waste / seeking specific knowledge about plant usage through the study of ethnobotany and anthropology / a slow and labor-intensive making process, rooted in collective creation / generating value through the way objects are used, gifted, and passed on / using public space as a workshop, where the physical work sparks conversation, encounters, and change.
